PREPARING FOR YOUR HOMEOPATHIC CONSULTATION
In the days before your consultation, we would like to offer some suggestions to help you participate more effectively in your Homeopathic Consultation. We hope to give you areas to think about prior to the visit, and give you an idea of what to expect during the course of treatment.
We start the consultation by asking you for a description of the condition for which you are seeking treatment. The questions are fairly detailed. For instance, if you are suffering from some form of headache, we will ask the nature of the pain. Is it stabbing, shooting, throbbing, burning, aching, etc? What is its precise location? Is the pain deep inside the head, superficial, or does the pain move? We will also ask about any other physical complaint going on at the same time. What makes it better or worse?
After we have discussed the main condition, you will be asked many questions about different aspects of your life. This helps us round out the picture and choose the remedy that most closely fits you as a person. Homeopathic treatment is tailored to the individual as well as the medical condition. We will ask about the quality of your life. How vital and energetic do you feel? How does food, weather, time of day or time of year affect you? It is important to be completely candid in the Homeopathic Consultation. Nothing is too trivial or insignificant. Many patients have an innate or intuitive sense of why something is happening in their life. We welcome these comments.
At some point, depending on the condition, we may need to do a physical examination, order lab work, or obtain medical records. If you have any medical records pertaining to your condition, please bring them along.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE COURSE OF YOUR TREATMENT
The goal of Homeopathy is to effect a gentle and thorough improvement of the medical condition. Each person reacts to the remedy in a different way. Usually the effects are gentle and gradual. At times, more rapid or dramatic changes occur.
For some, there are temporary minor aggravations of symptoms or recurrences of previously experienced symptoms. This is a positive sign that the remedy is working. Be patient, this is temporary and usually significantly less intense than the original complaint. If it concerns you, please call the doctor.
People with chronic problems improve over widely varying periods of time, usually 3-24 months. This is the time necessary to complete the cure. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal of homeopathic treatment is to reach a high level of health without being permanently dependent upon any medication. You will, however, experience definite improvement in your symptoms within a few weeks of starting the correct remedy. During the entire treatment, regular follow-up visits are essential to aid the healing process. It may become necessary to change a remedy or to take a second dose of the same remedy. In our experience, we find that the changes are so gentle that frequently the patient is unaware of the changes. We suggest that after the initial Homeopathic Consultation you write down as many details of how your condition impacts your life as possible. From time to time in the 4 - 6 weeks following the remedy, you can compare your previous situation with your current situation. Then, during the follow-up we can address whatever is new or remaining from the original condition.
We suggest that you visit the library or our office and borrow a book on homeopathy. We have found that the more patients learn about homeopathy, the better they are able to assist the progress of their own homeopathic treatment.
